Out of the ten flags that were placed within the Tiandihui initiation ceremony grounds, five were made up of the flags of the ranks. The flag shown is the flag of the ‘gong’ or duke. Apart from the duke, there were flags of the ‘bo’ or earl, the ‘nan’ or baron, the ‘hou’ or marquis and ‘zi’ or viscout. These secret society paraphernalia were found in the William Sterling Collection. William George Stirling was the Assistant Protector of Chinese in Singapore from 1921 to 1931.
