Chinese blue and white porcelain ware was widely used in Southeast Asia. It was cheaper and more durable than polychrome enamel ware. It was used by the Peranakan Chinese mainly for ancestral offerings and for making offerings during funeral ceremonies, as blue (a substitute for black) and white were their traditional colours of mourning. However, such wares were common and thus not exclusive to the Straits Chinese household. This particular spoon features floral and foliage motifs.
