Mr. Yeow Meng Cheow (third from right) was a Singaporean who had a series of published achievements in business and sports. In 1942, he developed a highly purified motor fuel as a wartime substitute for mineral petroleum. His post-war commercial endeavours included the manufacture of plastic display signage and lampshades, and ashtrays made from corals. His plastic factory was the first in Malaya to import and use Perspex, a type of acrylic glass used in signboards and lampshades. Mr. Yeow was also an outboard motor racing enthusiast and he won various prizes in the first Outboard Regatta held in 1953. A year later, he led three fellow enthusiasts on an outboard expedition to Penang.
