'Drainage Works at Potong Pasir'

In pre-independent Singapore, flooding occurred frequently in low-lying areas during the monsoons. Potong Pasir was one such area that experienced heavy flooding whenever the Kallang River overflowed its banks. This could be disastrous for the pig farms in the area. This woodcut illustrates the camaraderie in the farming community, as a group of farmers is involved in dredging the river to prepare for the coming rains. The father figure in the foreground is explaining the significance of the scene not only to his sons, but also to the viewers of the print.
