Striding Garuda with naga

This drawing may be a sketch for a painting that has been done with brown ink first and then finished with black. Garuda is represented like a warrior with a muscular human body and striking a bold pose. Garuda is shown in profile with a beaked nose, wearing an elaborate crown, intricate necklaces and mekhala, (waistband) and a vanamala (floral garland) almost below his knees. Above his head is a kirtimukha (face of glory, a mask-like creature that appears above temple doorways) and below is a composite tiger or yali with a common head and different bodies and stretched upright tails as if in a combat. The fluidity and confidence of the lines and attention to detail suggest they were created from the pen of a master artist.
