The flags of the five founders of the Hung Society were used during the Tiandihui initiation ceremony. They represented the society’s five founders and the provinces of its lodges. Representing the first lodge, the black flag with a green border shown is the Green Lotus Hall or ‘Qingliantang’. The Chinese character ’tong’, denoting togetherness, is written in the centre of the flag. These secret society paraphernalia were found in the William Stirling Collection. William George Sterling was the Assistant Protector of Chinese in Singapore from 1921 to 1931.
