This copper coins played an important role in secret society rituals. Three coins had to be kept on a person at all times. During the initiation ceremony, a symbolic number of coins (e.g. 3,7,9,21,36) was used as payment. This payment of fees parallels certain Masonic rituals, e.g. the “Bridge Fee”.
