Jichimu wood is also known as qizimu or chicken-wing wood as the grains in the cross-section of the wood seem to mimic the pattern of chicken wings. This type of wood is divided into old and new jichimu. The old wood has a crab-claw design with a purplish brown colour in between while the new jichimu is coarse in texture and is purlish black in colour.
