This gold finial is in the form of a ‘makara’, a mythical reptile in Hindu-Buddhist mythology. It has a highly ornamented body and upward curving fangs. This ornament belongs to the Indo-Javanese period which saw the use of Indian symbols in Javanese goldwork.
