This hanging is possibly from India, and it depicts repeated design of a young couple in western dress in a garden with foliated tendrils and animals such as rabbits and snails. Such designs reflect European influence. These new patterns were particularly attractive to younger textile-makers who were possibly more open to new ideas. As the new motifs lay outside of the traditional system of designs, they could be used by anyone without trespassing social boundaries.
