This square batik headcloth features foliage designs with a lozenge in the centre. It has been suggested that the diamond-shaped lozenge could represent the Diamond Being who, in Indian philosophy, might be the Buddha or a Hindu deity. The lozenge motif is also found on other Javanese textiles. The origins of batik are disputed. It has been suggested that it was introduced into Southeast Asia by Chinese migrants, although some point to India as the country of origin.
