This rectangular embroidered panel has a red silk base. The decorative design of this piece is a pair of phoenixes set against a floral setting. The decorative features are outlined in gold metallic thread couching to highlight the details. A border of floral motifs runs along the edge of the panel, together with short tassels. Phoenixes are auspicious symbols of virtue and prosperity in the Chinese culture. The style of using gold and silver thread couching to simply outline the principal details of a design is more commonly seen in Straits Chinese embroideries as compared to those of Chinese origins. Such panels were traditionally used as table covers, panels for picture frames, ornamental hangings pillow and bolster cases.
