Silk thread embroidery as in this example is commonly done in the satin stitch. This is a series of flat stitches sewn to cover a section of the background fabric. The decorative motifs include small white and purple flowers on a red background. Larger panels such as this were usually commissioned from professional embroiderers in Canton, China. They were made and shipped to their Peranakan customers in the Straits Settlements. The red background suggests it could possibly have been used for festive occasions such as weddings as red is considered an auspicious colour in the Chinese culture.
