This piece of textile was woven by couching, where the decorative threads are stitched onto the cloth to form patterns. The floral patterns featured here surround a central motif, which could possibly represent a sun or eight-pointed rosettes. This embroidered square could have been used as a tray liner, cover for offerings or ritual gifts. Malay embroidery was inspired by Chinese needlework and it was used to add lustre to clothings, hangings, bolster ends, and mats. Common motifs of Malay stitch work include foliage, birds, and vases of flowers.
