An ink-rest is where a writer rests his ink stick. Ivory and jade were the most desired materials for ink-rests. The ivory ink-rest here is decorated with a pair of chi-dragons (hornless dragons) in openwork. Exquisitely designed and finely carved motifs appear along the rim and on the legs of the ink-rest.
