The dish combines the use of underglaze blue and overglaze enamels, probably an attempt at reproducing doucai (斗彩) style of the mid-Ming period (1466–1521), which involved the use of cobalt blue and enamels such as green, yellow, red and aubergine. This was exported to Japan during the late Ming period (1522 – 1620).
