This is a letter dated 6 March 1920 from the Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Bar Committee to E. R. Koek. Koek was acting on behalf of William Vernon Logan Van Someren, who filed an application for admission to the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements. The Hon. Secretary stated that if the Chief Justice decided to admit Someren, his committee would raise no objections. This letter is part of a collection of legal documents from the 19th and early 20th centuries which provides a glimpse into the work of the notable personalities who left their mark on Singapore’s legal history, and the economic and other transactions undertaken by ordinary immigrants in 19th century Singapore that tell stories of misfortune and indebtedness which would otherwise have disappeared from history.
