This is a blue sleeveless cheongsam with a nipped-in waist that was popular in the 1950s and 1960s. The flap on the right-hand side is secured by press studs while the zipper is at the side. There was an increased visibility of women in society in post-war Singapore as their roles shifted from the domestic to the public realm. One of them was Mdm. Chan Siok Fun, the owner of this cheongsam. Despite holding a full-time job as a teacher, she was also the Chief Commissioner of the Singapore Girl Guides from 1967 to 1976.Like many working women in Singapore in the 1960s, the cheongsam was Mdm. Chan Siok Fun’s preferred attire for work and official functions.
