'Silat Seni Gayong' students in action at Kampong Ambar in Lorong Engku Aman, Singapore

'Silat' is a form of martial arts developed by the Malays. 'Silat Seni Gayong' is one of the most popular 'silat' styles. It originated from a Bugis tribe on the island of Celebes and has been around since the 1400s. Dato Meor Abdul Rahman has been credited for teaching and spreading the ‘gayong’ style in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The ‘gayong’ style uses striking and grappling techniques inspired by a tiger’s movements when it attacks its prey.
