This bed was imported from China, probably from the City of Fuzhou, by the early Chinese settlers in Singapore. It would have been equipped for use with a shallow mattress, folded quilts and hard pillows. Its curtains were often held up during the day by large sickle-shaped hooks. The small compartments recessed into the bed were meant for storing the owner’s personal effects. It is decorated with an intricately carved panel at the top, and red pigments.
