This stoneware bowl is painted with an underglaze iron-brown decoration. The central medallion features hand-painted fishes in underglaze iron-brown, a distinctive motif of the Sukhothai ceramic tradition.A wide range of glazed ware were made at the Sukhothai kilns including plates, bowls, jars, bottles, covered boxes as well as architectural fixtures. In general, the wares were decorated in underglaze brown on a heavy cream-white slip background covered with a clear, milky or slightly greenish glaze. The royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai in north-central Thailand were at the heart of one of the largest ceramic-producing centres in Southeast Asia during the 14th century. Si Satchanalai, which was later renamed Sawankhalok, came to refer to ceramics that originated from either of these two areas.
