Monochrome wares such as this example with a brown-glazed exterior and an underglaze blue decoration were known as ‘Batavian' ware. Typically, this group of ceramics had lustrous monochrome glazes that ranged from a gold tone to a dark bronze tint, to "dead leaf" to lustrous cafe an lait brown and were exported to Europe from Guangzhou in small quantities.
