This makara carving is a rare surviving example of an ornament for a processional palanquin used in important ceremonies in the Northeastern Malay Peninsula. Makara is the vehicle of the Hindu river goddess, Ganga and is said to be a composite creature with features of a crocodile, fish, goat, and elephant.
