In the kampongs, space was never an issue as communal living was the norm. People had ample storage space beneath the raised attap houses for larger items such as bicycles, grinders, and water containers. However the new Housing and Development Board flats were compartmentalised into smaller areas for specific need such as cooking, washing, sleeping and entertaining. Families moving into these flats in the 1960s had to discard some household items (such as those shown here) that they no longer needed or had space for.
