This tea bowl has deeply carved decoration covered in an olive-green celadon glaze that is typical of Yaozhou wares. Also known as Northern Celadons, these wares were produced in Shaanxi province for the domestic market and were the forerunners of the famous Longquan celadons from southeast China.Celadon is a French term taken from the character of a shepherd in a 17th century play, who wore a green costume. The term refers to green-glazed wares, where naturally occurring iron oxide reacts to the lack of oxygen during firing in the glaze by turning green.
