View of Raffles Place

Commercial Square was officially renamed Raffles Place in 1858. The increasing number of licensed motorcars in Singapore had resulted in parking problems in Raffles Place as early as 1930. Horse-drawn carriages were almost extinct by the early 1900s although rickshaws were still available. The parking lot is surrounded by buildings such as the John Little building and the Mercantile Bank building depicted in the centre of the picture.
