This large basin is decorated in a rich and colourful palette with many Chinese auspicious designs that is typical of Peranakan Nonyaware. It consists of floral, fruiting plants and bird decorations in polychrome enamel glazes. These include phoenixes and peonies, where the phoenix represents beauty, grace and high virtue and also symbolises the bride or the empress while the peony is a symbol of spring, love, beauty and good fortune.A wash basin such as this example would have been used by Straits Chinese households.
