This incense burner has a gilt-edged, rounded mouthrim and a bulbous body with applied ring lugs in the form of black, lion heads on each side. The burner is covered in a matt brown glaze. Brown glazes are derived from the iron oxides fired under different conditions. The greater the concentration of iron in the glaze, the darker the colour. The shape, colour and texture bears similarities to the utilitarian bronze form of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Vessels of this type may have been the prototypes for the brass incense burners used in Chinese temples in Singapore.
