This gilt-rimmed, foliated offering dish is painted with rich and colourful polychrome enamels. It has a rose-pink border decorated with auspicious Buddhist symbols. While the interior has a painted design of phoenix and peony sprays, traditionally symbols of fertility Altar vessels were like this example used for making offerings of food, flowers and wine, and also to burn candles and incense sticks. They included dishes, bowls, cups and spoons. These vessels, usually made of porcelain, were laid out as if to present a meal to the ancestors.
