Founded in 1842 by the Scottish merchant William Henry Macleod Read, the Singapore Turf Club was originally known as the Singapore Sporting Club. It changed its name to the Singapore Turf Club in 1924 due to the racing activities that were held there. In 1933, the race course relocated to Bukit Timah as the facilities at Farrer Park proved insufficient. However, the races were only opened to the public in 1960.
