This broad, thick pillow with a slight concave in the middle, rests on a bean-shaped base. A white slip covers the buff stoneware body on which an iron-brown pigment has been painted, followed by a clear glaze. Large quantities of utility wares were thus decorated, in styles and themes employed in painting and woodblock printing of this time.Cizhou wares were made at kilns in Hebei and other parts of China, such as Henan and Shaanxi. They include common daily objects, such as vases and pillows. Pillows were made in many different forms like headrests for the living and for accompanying the dead in their eternal rest.
