The two actresses depicted in this photograph are wearing heavy make-up, an important component of Chinese opera. Regardless of the nature of the character played, male or female, every actor applies the same basic make-up, which consists of white foundation laid thickly over the face and neck, followed by rouge blended on to the cheeks, the sides of the nose and the eyelids.
