This silver model of a two-storey house shows many features such as the pitched roof, the verandah or porch in front and a high ceiling which are typical of Malay architecture. It is decorated with engraved designs which imitate decorative wood carvings found on Malay houses.During colonial expeditions, a wide variety of objects were collected ranging from musical instruments to life-sized houses. Model or miniature versions of daily life objects were commissioned as these were popular methods of displaying the cultural identities of colonial subjects. These objects were put on display during the large colonial exhibitions held in European cities such as Paris and Amsterdam in the late 19th century.
