This is thought to be a ceremonial dance shield from the Bidayuh people of western Borneo. Interwoven rattan creates intricate patterns, and a strip of bamboo strengthens the edges. The applied wooden design also added strength as well as decoration. A high level of craftsmanship and expertise was required to produce objects like this.
