The rickshaw was an immediate success after it was introduced in Singapore in 1880, becoming a highly popular form of cheap and efficient transportation. By the mid 1920s however, the heyday of rickshaws was coming to an end as customers began switching to other modes of transportation such as motorised vehicles. Trolleybuses, introduced by the Singapore Traction Company in 1925, was another attractive alternative as they ran on regular schedules. These vehicles were using Anderson Bridge, which opened in 1910 and helped to ease the heavy traffic on the nearby Cavenagh Bridge that in turn became a footbridge. In the background lies Fullerton Building, which housed the General Post Office and other government offices during the early half of the 20th century before the outbreak of the Second World War.
