The students protest against the National Service Ordinance

In what was known as the May 13 Incident, students from Chinese middle schools had demonstrated against the National Service Ordinance that was introduced by the British in 1952 and took effect in 1954. The police had to be called in to disperse the students, during which 44 boys and 1 girl were arrested. The riots against National Service turned many of these Chinese middle schools into breeding grounds for communist sympathisers in Singapore.
