Embroiderer

This water colour painting depicts a Muslim embroiderer creating motifs with a piece of material stretched over a frame. In the painting, the embroiderer is sitting on a red and white dhurry (hand-woven rug) in a small room. Through a side door, the open country is visible. The horizon and the blue sky can be seen in the distance. The combination of the open and enclosed spaces suggests an understanding of special treatment which the artist has consciously employed in order to keep his album of pictures fairly uniform.
