School field trips are an integral part of an all-round education. The British did not take responsibility for providing educational opportunities to the children of Chinese (and Indian) immigrants. As a result, the Chinese schools in Malaya and Singapore were financially supported by clan associations and built to exclusively serve the Chinese community. A modern curriculum was introduced in Chinese schools of Malaya and Singapore in the early 20th century. Students were taught science, arithmetic, geography, history, languages, ethics, drawing, singing and physical education. Field trips were organised to enhance the learning experience.
