Although a large number of Chinese women were sold to prostitution, some found employment as ‘amahs’ in European households. Despite their menial positions, these amahs considered themselves fortunate in comparison to their counterparts. Many European children were nurtured completely by their amahs in their early years which resulted in their close bonds with them.
