This bankruptcy settlement document was signed by Lady Sophia Raffles, the wife of Sir Stamford Raffles, and the creditors of the City of London Bankers and Co-partners, William Sikes, Henry Sikes, and Thomas Wilkinson. Raffles was increasingly saddled with debts in 1826, after he received demands from the East India Company for repayments of his salary and the funds spent on his missions in 1819. Sophia Raffles assumed responsibility for these debts after his death on 5 July 1826. In this document, she appoints her brother, William Hollamby Hull, as her lawful attorney.
