This is a letter from John Crawfurd, the British Resident of Singapore from 1823 to 1826, to Alexander Laurie Johnston, John Argyle Maxwell, Alexander Guthrie, James Clarke, and Hugh Symes, who were among the leading European merchants and residents in Singapore at the time of writing in 1824. In the letter, Crawfurd requests that the men immediately move the gunpowder to Sandy Point (located at the marine yard in Tanjong Rhu) for temporary storage. Thereafter, they would have to export the gunpowder from Singapore as soon as possible, due to the lack of space in the public magazine for the safe storage of such large quantities of privately-owned gunpower.
