This set of brass model table and chairs was probably commissioned for public display. During colonial expeditions, a wide variety of objects were collected ranging from musical instruments to life-sized houses. Models or miniature versions of daily life objects were commissioned as these were popular methods of displaying the cultural identities of colonial subjects. These objects were put on display during the large colonial exhibitions held in European cities such as Paris and Amsterdam in the late 19th century.
