Originally from South India, the Chettiars started coming to Singapore during the 19th century. They were mainly bankers and moneylenders, and given the nature of their jobs, it was unsurprising they were not the most popular figures on the island. This Chettiar money-lender sports the typical shaved head and wears the muslin garments of this Hindu caste.
