Gelai Tutup are Victorian style bell jar cloches, possibly made from hand blown glass. It is one of the decorative items that young Nonyas made for the wedding chamber during the 12 day traditional Peranakan wedding. This form of handiwork was derived from the British during the colonial period in Malaya. This piece consists of seasonal flowers in full bloom placed in a Victorian vase. Monkeys swing from the branches. A porcelain boy and girl rest at the base of the vase. The whole display rests on a beautiful circular patch of velvet ‘irish carpet’.
