This is a pair of tie hangings worn by the bride and page girl during the wedding ceremony. Each hanging has a similar set of motifs which include the dragon, peony flower and ‘qilin’. These are auspicious symbols in the Chinese culture. The dragon symbolises security and good fortune. Peonies represent wealth and prosperity while the ‘qilin’ is a hoofed Chinese mythical creature that is believed to be a bringer of sons. Metallic thread embroidery is used to highlight the main decorative motifs on this piece.
