Opened in 1857, the Europe was originally a small hotel which occupied two bungalows facing the Padang. The hotel was refurbished in the early 1900s and was transformed into a 120-room hotel and renamed the Grand Hotel l’Europe by 1907. Due to a decline in business, the hotel closed in 1932 and was subsequently demolished to make way for the Supreme Court building.
