The Europe Hotel in Singapore

Established in 1857 by French entrepreneur J. Casteleyns, Hotel de l'Europe had humble beginnings as a small establishment at Hill Street. It later shifted to Beach Road before taking over the premises of the Hotel de l'Esperance at the Esplanade in 1865. After changing ownership in 1869, the hotel was eventually bought over, demolished and redeveloped by Jewish businessman Nissim Nissim Adis in 1906. The rebuilt two-storey hotel, rechristened the Grand Hotel de l’Europe, had over 100 luxuriously furnished rooms, as well as modern amenities such as electric lights, fans and a lift. It was subsequently taken over by the Europe Hotel Company in 1911 and renamed the Europe Hotel in 1918. Demolished in 1934 to make way for service flats, the site is now occupied by the Old Supreme Court building.
