Originally owned by the Namazie family, Capitol Theatre was opened in 1929. It was later acquired by Shaw Brothers in 1946. The 1,688-seat theatre became a popular venue for Hollywood movie screenings as well as live entertainment. Listed for preservation in 1983, the building was taken over by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and operations ceased on 29 December 1998.
