Moneylending was a service the Chettairs were known for, and promissory notes - which show the agreement to repay the loan to the lender during a specific time frame - were used in such transactions. In this case, the borrower had to repay the money within 100 days. Originally from South India, the Chettiars came to Singapore during the 19th century, where they also set up trading and banking services.
