This neck button, known as a modesty button, was traditionally worn by a Peranakan woman to fasten her collar. Buttons worn by Peranakan women tended to be ornamented and decorated with filigree gold, gilt silver and diamonds. In contrast, buttons for Peranakan men outfits were usually American or European coins that came in sets of five.
